What is an RSO?
A Radiological Safety Officer (RSO) is a qualified professional appointed by a radiation facility to ensure that all radiation protection activities comply with the rules and regulations of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) of India. Every licensed radiation facility — including hospitals, diagnostic centres, nuclear medicine departments, radiotherapy units, and industrial radiography companies — is legally required to have a certified RSO on their premises.
The RSO is responsible for implementing and monitoring the Radiation Management Plan (RMP), conducting periodic radiation surveys, maintaining personnel dose records, training staff on radiation safety, and reporting radiation incidents to AERB. The role is both technically demanding and professionally critical.
The AERB RSO certification is a legal requirement under the Atomic Energy Act, 1962 and its associated rules. Without a certified RSO, a radiation facility cannot obtain or renew its AERB licence to operate. This makes RSO certification one of the most career-critical qualifications for medical physicists, radiochemists, and radiation safety professionals in India.
Beyond the legal requirement, RSO certification demonstrates a standardised level of competency in radiation protection, regulatory compliance, and emergency preparedness. The RSO certification pathway in India follows a structured process managed through the AERB eLORA portal.
Your facility's management must nominate you as a candidate RSO through the AERB eLORA portal. Self-nomination is not permitted — you must be employed at a radiation facility that holds or is applying for an AERB licence.
Complete the mandatory 3-month radiation protection training at an institution approved by AERB. Training centres include BARC Training School (Mumbai), RMC (Bangalore), and other approved hospitals and universities.
After training, your institution submits your exam application through eLORA. The exam is conducted by the Radiation Protection & Advisory Division (RP&AD) of BARC, typically twice a year.
A written exam of 100 objective-type questions (MCQs) covering the five major subject areas. Duration: 2 hours. Passing score: typically 50% minimum, though this can vary by year and category.
On passing the exam, the AERB issues your RSO Approval Certificate through eLORA. This approval is facility-specific and valid for 3 years, after which renewal is required.

Most RSO exam questions are India-specific. While ICRP principles apply, the dose limits, safety codes, and regulatory references must align with AERB guidelines (SC/MED-2, SC/MED-3). Do not rely solely on international textbooks.
Approximately 30–40% of questions involve calculations: radioactive decay, shielding thickness, dose rate estimation, and HVL/TVL problems. Practice these until they become second nature. Use the Radiation Toolkit for unit conversions.
The AERB RSO exam typically has 100 questions to be answered in 2 hours. Take full-length timed mock tests at least 2–3 weeks before your exam date. This improves both speed and stamina.
